The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)

One of the earliest modern data privacy laws, PIPEDA was first passed in April 2000 and enforced by January 2004. At-a-glance, key attributes of this legislation are:

one

Businesses subject to PIPEDA include private sector, federally regulated organizations (e.g. banks), and those transferring data across borders.

two

The foundation of PIPEDA are the 10 "Fair Information Principles," defining PIPEDA compliance for all subject organizations.

three

PIPEDA is similar to the GDPR in its focus on protecting sensitive personal information. It differs in violation fine structure and specific consumer data rights.
